By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyright 1 Sydney, November 21. Tha Union Company's steamer Wanaka has been delayed owing to further ealvage claims- in connection with her recent mishap. [In July of this year the Wannka broke down off the coast of Australia. After the lapse of somo days ono of the- officers volunteered to set out for help, 'and

readied land after a tempestuous voyage in an open boat. In the meantime, however, the sea-going dredge. Sir William Matthew came on the scene, and towed the Wanaka into port.l ■ ATIIENIC LEAVES HOBART. The head office of the Shaw, Savill. and Albion Company have received cable advice intimating that the s.s. Athenic left Hobart, in continuation of her voyage from London at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, and is due at Auckland about Saturday, POSITION OP THE VICTORIA. One of the passengers by the Wcstralla, which arrived at Auckland on Monday, states that while in Sydney he' had a look at the Huddart-Parkcr. Ltd.'s, Victoria, and made some inquiries us to when she would be ready for sailing again. He says that it is .thought that it will take about another four weeks before ner overhaul will be completed. The overhaul is mostly to her boilers and engine-room, and she will, according to this report, miss about two more trips before getting on the run again. This means that she will not be able to complete another trip from Sydney to Dunedin, vin. northern ports and back again, before Christmas, which is unfortunate, iti view of the fact, that already two vessels are to be taken off the Australian ruuning before Christmas. SEAMEN'S UNION. Yesterday afternoon a special session of the executive council of the Federated Seamen's Union was commenced. ' The principal business of the session is to receive reports from the delegates who recently visited Australia, and to take steps to carry into operation, the recommendations of the Australasian Conference. The proceedings are being held in camera. Great difficulty has been experienced, in getting a. cook for the American sailer GoldeD Gate and ebc has now been waitin the stream for some days unable to .iroceed to so& on account of being short of a cook. The first offer was .-513 a month, and recently this was raised to £20 for the trip to Melbourne, in addition to the fare back to New Zealand, or £20 a month if the cook' cared to stay on. Late last evening a,cook was procured, and the Union Company's Terawhiti wont to take the Golden Gate out to sea, and she left the port late lest night for Melbourne, where she has 23.000 cases of oil to discharge. Shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday Captain N. H. Ward, who was recently operated on at the -Davis Street Hoopitel, died on that- institution. Captain Ward was reported to be making good progress after his operation, which took place late last week. He has held the position of stevedore to the '5011111 Taranaki and Patea Shipping Company for some time. | Mr. K. J. M'LeWan has signed off. the Monowai, where he occupied the position of extra officer. Mr. F. S. Horn, extra officer of tho Moeraki, has come ashore. * Mention was made in a recent issue of the Sydney "Shipping List" about the delays which have been caused to both overseas and inter-State steamers at Sydney, on account of the strike. Altogether the position was, and is, very serious. Early in the month thcro were 24 steamers affected, and 450 men off articles, and .a later return shows that there aro over 40 6teamers idle. The Opawa was one of the vessels affected, but she has since got away, and arrived at" Auckland yesterday. A mishap occurred to the dredge Whaka on Monday morning. at Lyttelton. While working between Nos. 2 and 3 wharves the chain connecting the grab claw with the winch drum snapped while a load of material was being drawn aboard. Tho claw fell back to the water, but as it was itill connected to Hie wire hawser, was afterwards recovered.

The Tainui, which left on Monday, and which got to Waitara last evening, is to load transhipments for a Home boat. She will get here on Friday, and sails on the return probably on Saturday. Levin and Co. advise that a special trin not connected with any accumulation of cargo will be run by the Wakatu from Lyttelton to Kaikoura and back, and that she will not get to Wellington until Friday. She returns to Lyttelton on Saturday, i The Hinemoa leave.? at 5 o'clock, this morning on her quarterly trip round tho northern lighthouses and harbours.
