NATIVE FLORA
A FLOURISHING NURSERY
AT THE WIRELESS STATION
Not long after the Government wireless station was established on tho Tinakori Hills it was decided, at the suggestion of Mr. J. Orchiston, Chief Engineer of Telegraphs, to try and convert that bleak locality into something other than a mountain-top wilderness. Being an enthusiast in matters appertaining to native flora, Mr. Orchiston set himself out to secure specimens of all tho native trees and shrubs that he could secure or induce others to procuro for him. As the result of his efforts, planting -was begun on a definite plan three years ago, and to-day the fruits of that labour are beginning to make themselves apparent. There are to-day planted -within a 30-acro radius of the wireless station no fewer than 20,000 native trees-, shrubs, and flowers of the very widest variety, secured from as far north as tho lovely Kermadecs to as far south as tho bleak, rain-sodden Macqnarie Island: and, curiously enough, on this -wind-swept hill-toi> most of these specimens aro flourishing, in a modest way at present; vet flourishing. To-day one may fieo Mt. Cook lilies blooming near tho wireless, whilst in close proximity are PTowihg shrubs from the sub-tropical Kcrmadcns. And Toiind them all has been planted for shelter purposo a big belt of pines. 5000 in number, not the common quick-PTOwing, quick-falling pimis insisnis, but tho hardy, slowgrowing pinus robusta. and iimus laricio, trees that root deeply and can stand -up before the fiercest of our noHh-wcsterlv gales. „ Convinced that the hill-ton nlantation will interest many, Mr. Orchiston has prepared a. list of the native trees which have a representative at tho wdreless station. The botanical names of tli<* trees nnd shrubs nro set forth as follow, with the intive name m parentheses wherever it ,is X ll . owl ~'"r" .Acnena- sauguisorhac (pivipiril, Aciphvlla (new snecies), Alectron excclsum fti'toki), Aralia Lessonii (lioumnpara), Angelica gingidium.'Archeria Travorsn, Aristotplia racemosny (niaknmako').
