EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS
The monthly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held on FrTuay evening. Mr. T. W. Pilclier (AcSng-Mayor) presiiled, and there were also present Councillors Russell, Foley, Cook, Preston, Morris,. Levi, and Macplierson. Correspondence was, read from the Chief Postmaster at Wellington in reference to the provisions of a- com-in-the-slot telephone at Eastbourne. It was decided by the council that the expense involved in providing tho telephone would not be justified. "A request that tho telephone hours be extended so that tlio office-at Eastbourne bo open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. was the subject of another letter from the Chief .Postmaster who advised that uic exufflsion asked Tor was only granted: when fifty suosenbers or over asked for the extension, or when from 31 to 50 subscribers agreed in writing to pay an additional 351 per annum each. With reference to tho request that the Post Offico provide another mail delivery in parts of the borough, it was pointed out by tho Chief Postmaster that it was not practicable with tho services of one man. . There had been a trial, but it had not proved satisfactory. . ' , The council dealt with the gorse and. noxious weeds nuisance on certain properties, and the Town Cleric was instructed to notify offending owners that thev were liable to prosecution u they did not have the weeds destroyed. The matter of '.outstanding rates was discussed, and it was decided that if the rates were not paid by iNovember 30 the council would probably take action and sue lor ninounts. Accounts amounting to os. Jd. were passed lor payment.
