Ho had just reached military age, and in view of the extraordinary popularity which lie enjoyed with the public, bis clandestine. departure smote the "sports" with something of a shock of pained surprise. On November 16 amongst tho luggage of -a passenger departing by tho American steamer two letters were found addressed to Darcy, one bearing the pencilled signature, of a well-known Sydney sportsman. Tlie passenger and his luggage were taken ashore.
