SOLDIERS ON THE LAND
At yesterday's meeting of the Advisory Board of the War Relief Societies, the following communication from Asliburton was considered: — 1. . Under the Discharged Soldiers Act, applications for land must he made hy the men themselves, no provision being made for application hy an agent. This does not seem fair to men on active service, who, however, are given the right to apply through an agent for land thrown open in the usual way. A block of land might be thrown open under the above Act, close to the residence of a man on active service, and 'he should certainly have an' opportunity of obtaining a section" through the agency of his relatives or friends. 2. Can you tell mo whether .111 enlisted man, not yet in camp, has any sort of protection from his creditors? 3. I liavo had a couple of complaints from relatives of sick men who have been summoned to Wellington by telegram, and have been refused admission to the camp on the authority of the telegram alone, a pass from the Defence Office being demanded. Surely the telegram should be sufficient authority. The Advisory Board's decisions we're: 1. Referred to the Land Committee. 2. No. - 3. Will be brought before the Minister. From North Otago the following remit was received:—"That the Government be asked to assist returned soldiers taking up land by giving special railway concessions on the carriage of material for building and fencing purposes." 1 The board decided to ask the Govern, ment to consider the matter.
