Acceptances for the Feilding meeting close to-night. Entries for tho Woodvillo mooting aro due to-night. ° • T i he J?? *! th ? first llorEO wlio has earned off the treble, comprising tho Derby Un terbmy Cup, and Stead Cup. The colt jumped over the door of his box, and had it not been lor signs of a resulting trouble would have very probably mado a much biggor figuro than 260gns. • The southern trainers-A. Fleming and M. Ldwards-passod through here yesterday on thoii- way north for tho Otahuliu trotting meeting, which -opens on Saturday. The former toot -Madam Shaw, Lucille, and El Rosa, and Edwards had Mnndanno. A southern writer says-.-"A. Oliver is deservedly recognised as ono of our most capable horsemen. He can win with a hoiso that many can loso on, and if he lias a fault it is a-strong tendency to own tho rails. At Riccarton, where there is a long run in, this amounts (o an error after a horse has reached the straight. As near as possiblo to' tho rails is always the shortest way home, but in tho final couplo of furlongs at Riccarton it is as short a bit out from tho rails as it is near them." Tho New Zealand Racing Coiiutry Clubs Association recently held a meeting to consider what steps should bo taken in regard to tho doniand- of tho Commissioner of Taxes for income tax on tho profits of racing clnbs aftor Iho 5 per cont., already provided for, had been paid. Tho meeting came to a resolution, and approached tho Sports Protection League, and tho chairman of that body has replied as follows:—"The subject of your letter has been carefully considered by. the league. The president informs tho loaguo that a test case is to bo shortly, heard, at Iho instance of tho Racing Conference, to detormiuo to what extent and on what income, racing clubs aro liablo for income tax. Tho matter is in a very difficult position. It is probable that racing clubs wore always liablo to some kind of inco'mo tax, but the Solicitor-General held the other view. Recontly tho lawwas altered, but, although the CominisKionor of Taxes' view of tho alteration is incarroct, it raises tho wholo question of incomo tax." A romarkablo circumstauco connected with Sasnnof's racing- in Australia is
that lio Las been ridden in nearly every raco by 11 different jockey. Previous to fcho Mclbourno Cup Foley had not ridden him in public, but ho was nn the Martian goldiiig in ono w two of his training gallops. Tlio programme drawn up for the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting is ono that is 6uro to appoal to owners in all parts of tlio Dominion. Its most attractive- feature is llio Now Zealand Trotting Gold Cup, which, besides ji stake of 250 sovs., lias a gold cup valued aHOO sovs. attached to it. Such a valuable) race would havo been made much moro interesting had tho existing limit of '1,5-J. boon cut down by several seconds. So narrowly did Tlio Toft' defeat Egypt on each occasion that they met at iiiccarton that many people hold the opin. ion that when next they are scon out tho \attoi- will reverse, tlio C.J.C. form, as ho is more capable of improvement than is The Toff. Tho next meeting of tho pair 'will certainly arouse interest, because thero is so littlo between them, but if anything The Toff is tho greater bulldog, and it was his tonacity that helped him through at tlio finish of tho Stead Cup, and landed him a victor. ramnui'o arrived back at Awapuni littlo the worso for his exertions in the south, and the imported horse is as sound now as lie has been since ho camo to the country. So far no programmo lias been mapped out for tho chestnut at Christmas, but it is unlikely that ho will be prepared for tho Auckland Cup, while ho was not nominated for tho .Railway Handicap. Mr. A. J. Toxward's two-year-old filly War Scare (Maniopoto—Lady Lucy) is to accompany Crowhuret to Feilding, and will be a runner in tho Oroua Stakes on the second day of tho meeting. Tho Brewer, who scored in tho Steeplechase on the opening day of tho Winton meeting, had shown no form previously sinco ho unexpectedly finished second in tho Grand National Steeplechase, won by Ngatoa. in 1915. After that performance it was expected that he would bo a useful stake-earner in tho Southland district, but he failed repeatedly. Included amongst the acceptances for; the Ashhurst meeting is Ngarua, who has' been off tho scone for a considerable time. The half-brother to Makara showed promise early in his career, but subsequently he went wrong, and has not sported silk for a considerable time. Makara is also on tho retired list, but his owner intends to'take him up again shortly, and have him hacked about with .a view to discovering whether he will stand a further preparation. Apropos of tho weight likely to bo given Sasanof in tho Auckland Cup, a northern scribe points out that St. Hfippo carried Bst. 91b. as a three-year-old, and won easily. This is a stone overweight-for-ago. Sasanof is a gelding, and would bo allowed 31b. in tho weight-for-age scale, 60 a stono over that scale would make his weight Bst. Gib. Even with this impost, if started, he may be a good favourite. BLOOD STOCK SALES By TolecraDh-Prcss Association-Oopyripnt (Rec. November IG,-5.55 p.m.) London, November 15. At the Newmarket blood-stock sales the demand was slack, many horses being passed in. The top prico paid was for Court Jester, who fetched 700 guineas.
