A GALLANT OFFICER

THE LATE CAPTAIN H. A. DAVIES. The following extracts from letters, recently received by Mr. J. 11. Davies, Wairjawa, in connection'with the death of his son, the late Captain, H. A. Davies, will interest his many friends here. Brigadier-General G. ]?. Linton writes: —''Captain Davies's death is a, very great grief to me, as he was my favourite officer. I waß deeply attached to him. A brave and gallant fellow, he was always in action when danger was greatest, "and greatly respected by his men." Colonel I: T: Standish writes: "On the morning of the 15th the brigade was ordered to advance into a position closer to the enemy, who had been driven back. Your son led his battery forward in a most gallant manner, and throughout the day did splendid work. Heavy shelling was going on the whole time, but he escaped it all until the evening. The only protection that can be had on these occasions is by digging a hole in the side of a. trench. This had been done by your son and his officer. They had turned: in for the night. The battery was. being shelled practically the; whole time. Late in the evening, while asleep, he was severely wounded by a. shell. All that was possible was done for him bv his brother officers, but, ho died on the way to the dressing station, not regaining consciousness. I can'only add that a more gallant and brave officer I have never Been. He was loved bv' his men, and had' made his battery the best in the brigade.'
