WELLINGTON'S POPULATION
Wellington's progress in the matter of population during the past five years as revealed by tho census returns now issued must be regarded as quite satisfactory. The increase is a little over 10,000—from 64,372 in 1911 to 74,695 in 1916. These figures, of course, relate only to Wellington City, and do not include the suburbs. It is of interest to note that the increase during tho past five years is about the average recorded during the ■' past twentyfive years, but is very much greater than that recorded at the last census. The figures showing the population returns at each census since 1886 are as follow: Census Year. Population. Increase. .1891 31,031- '5,076 1596 .17,441 6,420 1901 43,638 6,197 1906 58,563 14,925 1911 64,372 , 5,809 1916 74,695 ' 10,323 The suburbs of Wellington all show a percentage increase about equal to or greater than that of the. City itself, so that it may bo taken that progress has been well maintained all round. • ■ ' .
