Trench Comforts. The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Y.JI.C.A. arc arranging to have an open-air sale to collect funds for comforts for our soldiers. There will bo stalls in all the big centres, and beautiful home-made dainties, cakes, sweets, and produce of all kinds, eggs, poultry, and flowers will be on sale. All contributions will be gratefuly received by the committee, and can bo sent to the Y.JI.C.A. Building in Willis Street, which will be a central receiving depot under the charge of Madumcs Low and Dumbell. 'Hie stalls will be stationed at Government Buildings under Mrs. Wright and Miss Barnes; Kelburn Avenue, Mrs. Rose ■ Kelburn Kiosk, Mesdames Iverslov anci Varney; Post Office, Y.W.C.A., "Sirs. Campbell; Bank of N.Z., Mrs. Campbell; Boulcott Street, Mesdames Montague and Watorhouse; Winder's Corner, Mrs. Fossette; Courtenay Place, Madames Piper and Laurenson ;• Rin--toul Street, Mrs. Hamilton. Everyone will be sure to patronise so excelled an object as this, and our soldiers should benefit greatly bv this patriotic effort.
District Nursing Guild. The annual meeting of the District Nursing Guild of St. John was held at St. John's Schoolroom on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. W. H. S. Moorhouse presided. The annual report and bal-ance-sheet ivere submitted and adonted. The thanks of the guild are tendered to the Gear Company and many others for gifts of food, clothing, etc.; to subscribers for their continued' support; to the Macarthy Trust for a grant; to the Press, the auditor (Mr. C. Batten), and various.medical practitioners, and all others who have helped in any way in the work of the guild.
A lienrtv vote of thanks to the president, Mrs. Moorhouse, for the great help given by lier to the guild was carried unanimously. The district nurses were also accorded a vote of thanks for their efficient work throughout the year.
The nurses wish intending contributors to the children's picnic, to kindly note that the picnic will be lield on November 35, not December 2, as previously announced. They acknowledge with thanks the following donations: —Mrs. Rotherham, £1; Mrs. Rowntrce, 3s. Mrs. and Miss , Hayward, of the Hutt, arc oil a short visit to Rotorua. Mrs. Wickstoed, of Wanganui, is in Wellington; she came in order to see her grandson, who left with the Reinforcements yesterday. Mrs. C. F. Vallance, of the Wairarapa, is staying at the Hotel Cecil. Miss Anderson is the guest of Lady Whitmore, on the Marino Parade, Napier. She is leaving for England in tho Remuera. Mrs. J. Nelson, of Karori, is on a visit to l'aekakariki for a few weeks. Miss Sylvia Stowo left for Christ- 1 churcli on Tuesday night, and will be staying with Mrs. Kinsey. A general meeting of the /Wellington Women Teachers'■ Association will bo held at tho Education Board's rooms on Monday, November 20. The business will include annual conference matters, the question of women inspectors, and a discussion on tho Council of Education's report on "The Education of Girls."
The Countess of Liverpool, attended by Captain Gage-Williams and party, wero present at the Paul Dufault concert last niglit. Tho engagement is announced of Myrtle, third 'daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Sticltbury, of Takapuna, Auckland, to Sergeant John Cody, of tho Twentieth Reinforcements. • Mrs. Sullivan, of Roxburgh Street, gave an informd littlo farewell party yesterday for Sirs. I\orman Burton, and on 'behalf ofv her ll&man Catholic friends, presented her with a silver entree dish, suitably inscribed. Mr. Burton received a silver pencil. Mr. and Mrs. N. E. Burton are leaving to-day for Auckland. This evening, at 8 o'clock, the energetic members of tho Spinsters' Clnb will give a concert and danco in tho Returned Soldiers' Club. A danco is to be held on Friday next, November 17, at the Concert Chamber, Town Hall, the funds to bo given to augment those of the Trentham Christmas Dinner Fund. A fine volunteer orchestra will bo in attendance. The danco is under the management of Mesdames W. D. and F. D. Andrews and Middleton.
Mrs. D. G. Cameron, well known throughout the Dominion as an active worker in the temperance cause, and especially in the Good Templar Older, is dead, states a Press Association telegram from Dunedin.
Red cross Shops. A meeting was held yesterday afternoon ill tho Town Hall to discuss tho question of opening a Red Cross Shop 1 in-town for at least two days in every week. Of course,, if many societies come forward to take charge of it, so much the better, and then the shop could bo kept open for tho wliolo week. Mrs. Luke presided, and Mrs. Firth outlined the .'ichemc. It was suggested that the General Committee of tho Red Cross be tho present committee, with power to add to their number; that an executive be appointed of tlireo or five members, with a treasurer and secretary. As a beginning it was proposed to open the sales room for two days in every week. If 24 societies would undertake one of the two days, it would mean that their day would only arrive once in every three "months. Some discussion took place as to whero tho receipts were to be sent. Finally it -was unanimously agreed to send all money direct to tho Now Zealand representative of the British Red Cross, Mr. Elgar, the money to be used for New Zealand men at the front, and not hero in New Zealand. Those presont included: Mrs! Nathan, Mrs. Moorhouse, Mrs. Von Haast, Mrs. Salmond, Mrs. H. Hadfield, Mrs. Pitchett, Mrs. Tripp, Mrs. Crawford, Mrs ; Dutliie. Mrs. Blundell, Mrs. M'Kenzie, Mrs. Fuller, Mrs. Rowantree, Mrs. Hall, Mrs. C. B. Morison, Mrs. Cornish, Mrs. Robinson, and the Misses Cooper, Didsbury, and Moss. The Misses Cooper and Moss agreed to join in the movement, provided that their monthly payment ot £25 to the Lowry Bay Hospital might be continued, all extra money they made by the sale of flowers to go to the General Fund. All the ladies undertook to consult thcir_ varioiis committees. The next meeting was arranged to take place at 4 o'clock in the Town Hall next Thursday. •
Patriotic Cake Room. The committee of tho Patriotic Cake Room acknowledge with thanks gifts of home-mado cakes, sweets, etc., from the following donors:—Mr. and Mrs. Firth, Mesdames Smitton, Askew, Holmes, Badliam, G. The Kelbui'ji Boy Scouts ivi'll receive at least £53 from the benefit entertainment given them on Friday last. The returns are not yet complete, but already- the receipts total £58, and the expenses are under £5. In addition to the sale of . tickets, the sweet stall made £11 7s. 9d., flowers £3 13s. 7d., and cakes £G 10s. (Tel., whilo special donations total £3 lis. Naturally the Scortts are highly pleased at the success and are grateful to the ladies who assisted.
