WELLINGTON SOUTH V. NGAIO. The return match between the above clubs was played at the Newtown Public Library on Monday evening, when Wellington South were returned winners by 9 games to 4, after a hardfought and most enjoyable contest. The play was verx steady, no blunders being made at any of the boards. The first win of the match was scored by Mr. E. J. Falkiner (Wellington South), who thus repeated his performance in the recent mateb by telegraph against the Masterton Club. An interesting game at Board 1, botween tire 1 two club champions, ended in favour of Mr. Carman (Ngaio), who managed to gain three minor pieces for a rook, thus establishing a pronounced advantage for tiio end game, hi thanking tno home team for their kind hospitality, Mr. Topp,, tho Ngaio president, said that his team had thoroughly enjoyed the contest. They could hardly expect ,to win just yet, but they hoped later on to. fully extend tho Newtown team. (Applause.) In his reply, Mr. Armstrong. tho local president, mentioned that tno match was a much closer ono than the figures indicated, t his team having had to fight very hard for their wins. The prizes won in the Ngaio Club's' 1916 handicap tourney are to bo presented this evening as follow: —First prize (the Sutherland trophy), A. B. Topp; second prize, J, Lindsay; and third prize, P. W. Banks. Tho special prizes (first-class barred) have been won by Messrs. P. W. Banks and L. A. Browne respectively. Tho Brilliancy Prize (donated by Mr. E. E. Hicks) has been awarded to E. G. Tucker, as recommended by the adjudicators (Messrs. Barnes and Kelling). At the conclusion of the prize distribution tho remainder of tho evening will _bo devoted 'to the study of some instructive enft-game positions from the large collection gathered together for some' years past b,v one of Wellington's endgame enthusiasts.
