FRENCH CLUB
A party of French naval men now staying in Wellington attended the French Club's meeting on Wednesday, and as they conversed 'freely, and, in response to invitations, took part in the proceedings, the meeting proved especially interesting.' Monsieur Botrel read "Le Loup," a pieco by Guy de Maupassant. Mr. Foster played a brilliant piano piece and later in the evening ho played two other pieces which wero highly appreciated. Messieurs F'etivcau and Fernand, two of the visitors, sang several duets, all interesting, but perhaps the most so was "Le Montagnard." Monsieur Fernand also sang a humorous song, "I Love You," which, with tho exception' of these words repeated several times in the refrain, was entirely French.' The burden of it was a Frenchman paying court, as he supposed, to a pretty English woman, who in tho end told him she was French, and did not understand his English. Mr. Cooke read an extract, "La Vie Sous l'Eau," and Mr. Whetton recited "Le Soir." Miss Allan and Miss M'Diarmid gavo a scene from Molioro's comcdy, "Los Fcmmes Savantes," which was very well received. Then the "Marscillaiso" was sung by the visitor.s, the members joining in tho chorus. Mr. Foster played the Russian and Belgian National Anthems, and the visitors asked for "God Save the King," which was sung by the assembled company.
