SOLOISTS IN "THE MESSIAH'
: $ 1 ' December 7 has been deoided on as the date for the performance of Handel's oratorio "The Messiah," by the Wellington Choral Union. 'The committee nas selected the following soloists:—Soprano, Miss Minnie AYaugh (now in Australia); contralto,_ Miss Nina Caldow, ten'or; Sergt. Edwin Dennis (now in camp); bass, Mr. L. Barnes, of Christchurch. It will be remembered that Sergeant Dennis sang the tenor music very creditably in "Elijah." quite recently. He will have a better opportunity of displaying his quality in "The Messiah." The union is to be congratulated on selecting the man in khaki, bo long as he is as competent as the vooalist who has not joined up. Last Saturday's concert at the Town Hall showed that there was some very good local talent indeod in khaki. Miss Mina Caldow is probably the_ best oratorio contralto in Australasia. None others engaged by tho union in recent years can compare with this singer. Mr. L. Barnes has never sung in oratorio in Wellington, but is said to bo a good performer.
