CHRISTCHURCH MEETING CANTERBURY CUP WON BY THE TOFF ADJUTANT SCORES IN JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP,' By Telegraph—Press Association. ,£39,859, against .£36,841' for the corresponding day last yoar. A very poor lot paraded for t'ho Suburban Hurdles. , Banian was tho hestbaoked, but tho other five all carried a lot of money. The favourite should have won easily, but he,jumped very badly at each fence and lost ground. St. Curio, who is a splendid jumper, took obarge after going half a mile, and won easily, though he was vory tired at the finish. The top weight out-stayed the others, and gained second place. Critic was close upthird. All. started in the Spring Nursery Handicap, which was regarded as a good thing for the bracketed pair—Lingerie and Elocution. Despite the fact that the top weight is not over her cold yet, the public relied on lier to win. However, Ample proved herself quite superior ,on the day, for after getting badly left at the post she caught Lingerie, and won well; The favourite tired badly, and both Mount Joy and Vermillion beat / ~T he sadd le slipped on tho latter, and the lad had to ride the black filly bare-backed, a feat which was applauded by the crowd on her returning to tho scales. i .

The Avon Welter Handicap was regarded as an open event, but the Trentham horse Seadown started favourite. He lost no chance at any stage of the journey, and 6eemed unablo to go the fast pace set by Pindhorn and Yes over the first part of the race; After the leaders had compounded at the straight entrance Black Ada and Gold Soult came through, and a great finish botween too pair went to the light-weight by a head. Bunting, who was purchased by Mr. E. J. Watt prior to the race, ran close upthird. He was unlucky in getting off badly, and gave the winner and runnerup a good start. Comely, as usual, ran well up, and tho little-fancied Pabrinuette was fifth. : Only four starters went out for the Canterbury Cup. The Toff was a. good favourite with Mr. Dalgety's pair, Snub and Wardancer, next. The.bracket made the i.pace with' the favourite in behind on the fence. This was the order to the half-mile, where Snub tried to get a break, but his companion was with him entering the straight, and shortly afterward? tho favourite ran to (the front; and won anyhow. Indigo got second money, and Snub finished third. Tho first six furlongs took'lmin. 23sec, the mile lmin. 45sec, ten furlongs 2min. 12sec, and the full distance 3min. 53 3-ssee.

A big surprise was in store for backers in the Jockey Club Handicap, when the little-fancied Adjutant ran in an easy winner in. lmin. 33 3-ssec. At the Btart Bleriot, Sea Lord, and Taring'anyutu were the leading division, with Multiplication handy. The last-named got checked, and was 6ent back to the rear.- Entering the straight, the leaders were falling back, ; and Rewi Poto and Egypt became prominent. Halfway down Multiplication again appeared on the rails, but Rorko'6 Drift checked bis career. Adjutant then shot out, and won easily from Egypt and Rewi Poto, with Rangitero, Rorke's Drift, Fiery Cross, and Multiplication close up. Taringamutu was one of the last to finish.

Killena was favourite in a good betting raco in. tho Oaks. At the Btait Sweet Tipperary, on the outside, led from Killena and Marabout. The positions were unchanged at the home turn, where Devotion, nioved up, and entered the straight -well clear of the others. From this out the race was always safe in the keeping of the Trentham filly,' and she won by several lengths from Killena, with, Rose Pink a fair third, and then came Disdainful, Marabout, ■Madam Butterfly, Glen, Holon, and Sweet Tipperary in that order. . The winner is trained bv H.\Telford for Mr. W. E. i BidwiU. This is the first Oaks won by the Wairarapa sportsman, who was unI able to ho present to see his colours carried to victory. Shiela and Kiltless were left at the post, and took no part in the race. When the field raced on to the course proper Tantalus ■was in charge, with Sir Malt and Margerine handy. Halfway down the running Furling shot out, .and a greit finish between her and Ardmore ended in victory for tho light-weight by a. head. TCiljoy was close tip,, and then came Glorify, Margerino, and Thaddeus. As a race, the Otaio Plate was, a "failure. Seddel Bahr was a hot order, with Marco Bello and Ringfprni following in that order. At tho start the pace was a cra.wl, and pontuvued sp for a mile, when tho favourite jumped to tho front, but in tho straight Marco Bello caught up and beat him comfortably. 'San Sebastian finished fast in third place and Art was next.
