RECRUITING
THE "FAMILY SHIRKER " CLAUSE PROPORTION OF APPEALS -Although some of the groups are reporting brisk recruiting for the Twentythird and Twenty-fourth Reinforcefflents, the shortage over the whole Dominion is going to be large when volun\tary ■recruitmg is closed on the extended! date, Monday, November 13. Mne latest returns show that 1173 men ■Java been attested for the Twenty, (third Reinforcements, and 724 men for *he Twenty-fourth Reinforcements, as actual requirements of 2385 and gbout 2000 respectively. These figures Wo not bring the recruiting returns jmght up to date, and men appear to he 'turning forward fairly fast at tho present time, but the 'final shortage of voluntary recruits is not likelv to be much •4ess than 2000 men. V., Tl,e , M "inher of. men to be secured {through the operation of Clause 35 of pne Military Service Act remains an Uncertain' factor. More than 1600 noS C6E i have been sent out from Defence sHeadquarters for delivery by the police, tad about 400 appeals have been roSceived. A period of ten days after the {■delivery of the notice is allowed for /the appeal, and many of tho men concerned, have still time tq. exercise their ■right in this respect, but there is reason to believe now that a considerable '.proportion of the reservists affected by 35 are not gointto appeal. Some ,V>f them have enlisted during the last jweek, thus making the operation of the •'clause in their cases unnecessary. Apparently, the voluntary enlistment of ione brother, even after receipt of the notices, will clear other brothers in the same family, of liability for immediate service, though they will still face tie chances of the ballot as reservists of the First Division. Wellington Recruits.' \ The following additional men have .been attested 'in 'Group 5 (Wellington City and Suburbs):— G. F. Williams, carpenter, City. T. Wilson, storeman. City, R. FOR 23rd AND 24th REINFORCE- • ' MENTS;,. . ' ' .' By Telegraph—Prtau Palmerston N., Novcmber\B. The Wellington Distriot ;Headquarters announces that voluntary enlistJnerit for the Twenty-third and Twenty- j ffqurth Reinforcements' ceases at midtught on Saturday. Tho shortages will then be ■ assessed for the different groups, and a ballot to fill the same will be taken next .week.
