OPENING OF THE SEASON RAIN STOPS PLAY Prior to Saturday several attempts to opeu the cricket season had been made, and all bad: been frustrated by wet weather. Last week-end another effort was made, and tho season was begun. However, rain fell during the greater portion of tho afternoon, and shortly after 4 o'clock stumps were drawn at tho Basin Reserve. Tho wicket was ill good order, and was quito playable- long after rain commenced, but the conditions generally wero far from suitable for cricket. Two matches wero commenced on the Basin. Institute opened ■an innings against Trentliam, and Old Boys went in against North. Institute, new to senior cricket, have not made a good showing so far as they have gone. Tho Trontham bowlers included Horspool and Southall. Horspool, one of a family of Auckland cricketers, took two wickets' for ono run, and in addition dismissed two others bv catches.

Old Boys have made a fairly good, beginning against Nosth; they arc 78 on for two wickets. Both wickets fell to Windley at a cost of 13 runs. Details of the play follow: — INSTITUTE AND TRENTHAM.
