FOR SAVING LIFE

There are many great sacrifices men can make for their fellow-men, but one of'the noblest is the saving of life from drowning. Lives are saved from drowning every day, yet, while in some cases the rescuer does not risk himself to any great danger, thero are others where the rescuer endeavours to i save his fellow-man regardless of Ins own self. It is such cases as this that the Royal Humane Society wishes to reward, and on Saturday evening presentations were mado to Messrs. Middleditch and Black by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. LukoJ at the Concert Chamber, Totfn Hall

A concert was arranged by the Waterside Workers' Band, and during the evening Mr. T. Shields, local secretary of tho society, introduced the men who were to be rewarded, pnd Mr. }>uko paid a special tribute to their gallantry. _ Mr. Middleditch received the society's me<fellion and certificate. These were earned by tho rescuing of a man and a boy on two seperate occasions recently. Mr. Middleditoh has other rescues to his credit, so the honour was woll desei-ved. Mr. Black received the certificate for rescuing a njan and a little girl, also on separate occasions. Mr. Luke, in making the presentations, complimented the recipients, and called for three cheers, which were lustily given.
