GYNASTIC CARNIVAL
A gymnastic, carnival organised by tho Young Men's Christian Association in aid of the local association's Soldiers' Fund was held iu tho Grand Opera House on Saturday evening. Tho programme' was a lengthy and varied one, and tho many performers, mon, women, boys, and girls, made it thoroughly interesting. Graceful marches and movements, exhibitions of club swinging, .fencing drill, ball swinging, skipping, and rod exercises, parallel bar work, and a spectacular finale were among tho items. A' high degree of training and physical proficiency was shown throughout, and the effect was enhanced by tho attractive uniforms of tho various squads. Tho work of a largo team of small girls v.as particularly appreciated by the audience. Mr. M. Hugo gave an exhibition of weight-lifting, and showed fine muscular development. A display of horizontal bar work by a squad of men was £ very good item, and the audience was keenly interested in a demonstration of ju-jitsu methods of attack and defence by Messrs. H. A. Parker, W. J. Wray, 'and K. Dickson. A couple of clowns provided humorous relief at various stages of the entertainment.
