Kn tries for tho. I'eildimr Jockev Club's spring pieetmp close on J.'Yiday. * Weights for the Ashhurst meeting are due on Monday. l'orfeits for the FeiMing Stakes must l)e declared to-morrow. It is stated that the price paid for Hopfield, purchased by J: E. Thorpe inSydney, was lOOgns. The Wairarapa Gu,p will this year be yorth 500 so vs., and the Tauherenikau .Handicap 3/5 sovs. The Waugamii-wnod, but Ellerslieti ained, Royal Ruf us has gone \vroii fr and will not bo a starter' at Auckland meeting-, which opens on Saturday. " r^e ■^ a^ T Penury in the City Handicap at Ellerslie, and H. uoldnnch will be up on Colonel Soult. J-no last-naiued is & good favourite, .j. h ? Racing Club will JioKi its annual meeting to-day. Wellington patrons of the cjub can obtain, excursion rates, which will be available o'T l- train, which leaves Lambton Station at 7.50 a.m. The course adjoins the Claroville railway station, and the express train will stop there both goin" and' coming.
The 1 rial Plate, six furlongs, with which proceedings will begin, has drawn a big field, but they are . not a strong lot, though there are several winners njinongst them. The.Karamu cast-off, Hylauii, a winner at Waipawa, may be as good a favourite as anything else in tho race.
The Cup is run over a seven-furlongs course N this year, as experience has shown that the longer distance cid not draw good fields. Orleans, list., is top weight. He ran a very good race in tho Pearco Handicap, one niile, at Trentham, and a furlong from home his vicotry was being proclaimed. George, Sst.'*9lb., and Itod Kibbon, 7st. 131b., will both have plenty of supporters, but the pick of tho handicap seems to be Botanist, 7st. 131b., winner of the Open Flying Handicap on the second day of theOtaki ynecting. Thoughtful will most likely be withdrawn, and reserved }or the .Hack Welter Handicap, run Inter in the day.
Splendid us, who will carry the No. 1 saddlecloth in the Belvedere Hack Handicap, six furlongs, has bec-n performing most disappointingly this season, but with the racing he has had 110 should be equal to carrying top weight in such a field. Memo l'oto may be troubled by tho distance, but when well Manu can get a very good six furlongs. liio, 7st. 31b., has run one or two fair races this seaeon, and may be handy when the business end is reached to-day.
The dislanco in the Carterton Hack Welter Handicap will bo quite beyond tho majority of tho field, liongora lias a big weight, but tho class is weak, and well handled she may defeat Captain Glossop, Sst. 131b.
Tho form of Lady Black at Trenthum was sufficient!; good to recommend her tu tho confidence of backers in tho Mcctric Handicap to-day. llusliabyo now meets her 011 91b. better terms, but there was more than this between them at Trentham, though the scale of weights may be against the top-weight.
Tho Taratahi Hack Welter Handicap, seven furlongs, has drawn a better field than the larger event. Sir Agnes has a big weight, lOst. 'Jib., and may be reserved for the open event rim lutor in tho day. Thoughtful, list. Kllb., is well up to weight, ainl ilylaini. will probably make his nccond appearance in this race.
Captain Glossop's "owner may also elect to start in the shorter event, and if so his liorso should run . well, though .on Opaki form Thoughtful appears to have his measure. Tho last-named may ho tho machine favourite.
Tho Maiden Plate, five furlongs, has a lot of moderates engaged.' Stream of Gold goes well 011 tho tracks, and Galore and Aoliia showed a. lot of pace in their races at Opaki. The last-named ran third in t'lio Ataiden, when conceding a lot of weight to the other placegetters, and this'fonn entitles him to a lot of rospect for to-day's race.
The Maungaraki Welter Handicap, one mile, is tho concluding event. Tho round's include Sir Solo, Sst. Kill)., who showed a glimpso of his old form in the big handicap at Otaki, when ho was out in front for nearly a mile with hisstablo companion, Red Ribbon. If kept fresh for this race the Boris gelding, Sir Agnes, Bst. 81b., will he well supported, as ho seems to bo back to form again, and his sccond to Itoso Pink at Trontliam, when conccding the Kilbroney filly 101b., was a good performance.
