OPENING DAY BIG ENTRIES AND GOOD PROSPECTS EARLY RESULTS (From Our Special Reporter.) Palmerston N., November 1. Tim chief agricultural show of tho Dominion opened liero to-day. The lvcafiicr is and the prospects for a succcssful exhibition are good. Tho opening day is always the quiot day of tho big spring event, and thoro aro not very many people on tho ground. Thursday and Friday are the principal days. On Thursday tho stock is judged, and Friday is people's day. Tho schools' work, the home industries, and the fancy work were judged to-day," also tho pigs; and somo jumping events were decided in the ring. Signs of tho times are evident about the ground—every hero and thoro money is being raised for patriotic purposes. _ Tho biggest effort in this direction is the catering. For all the thousands of people who will attend the show the women of tho district have made provision, and,all the money raised will go to tho Sick and Wounded Fund. The war notwithstanding, this year's entries show an increase over last year's. Altogether there- aro well over 2600 entries. In the pis section the Porirua Menial Hospital won all tho first prices in Yorkshires, and E. ,T. I?o«ers, tile only exhibitor, secured tho firsts right through tho Large Black Division. In Borkshires tho Porirua Mental Hos-
pital won two firsts, Mrs. J. Wall lhred firsts, and E. J. Bogors and J. H. Bing ono first each. Firsts in Tamworths went to N. P, Nielsen (3): J. Kosors (2), and 8. B, R.vman (2). The judge said the show of pigs was tlie best ever luada here. 'Cho. improvement was quite noticeable, and thi3 v year's competition had brought ont soma of tlio finest pigs lie bad over judged. The Berkshires and the Yorkshires wero fit for an English Royal show. Hemp Competition. . Unscutchcd Hemp.—Maddron Bros., Winchester (J. Stone), 72 points. 1; A. and L. Seifert's Co., Shannon (R. H. The competitions resulted in a good proportion of entries, and. there was keen competition in a widely diversified list. Tho open riders' competition drew six entries, and the judges, Messrs. L. W. Nelson and A. Campbell, placed Budge Gordon, the well-known Hawera rider, in first place, with another good horseman in H. Hassall second. Third award went ' to G. D. Smith. Only two competitors contested the turning competition, tho award going to J. O'Donnell (Inaha), with R. D. Hark- . ne3s (To Horo) second.
