The Earl of Derby, in the Houso of Lords,_ made a statement reviewing the conditions in Mesopotamia. He said that the conditions had under the War Office's control. Basra was now a hive of industry, combining American hustle with British tenaoity. There was a satisfactory supply of barges. Their greatest difficulty was labour, but he hoped to overcome this by introducing a labour corps from India. Fresh meat was abundant, and the troops were on full rations. The "Transport and flying corps had been considerably reinforced, and tho hospital arrangements were being reformed. Formerly 2739 soldiers were sent into hospital every week. Now the average was 1705. The deaths formerly were 108 weekly, but now wero 39. Ho looked to the future with confidence.
