- The Board of Agriculture held meet- • fcgs on Thursday and Friday last. ; A Proposal which had been made to Jie (Jovornment, end sy it sent on to ,lhe board, 'to introduce stabblo quail .into the Dominion was discussed. As tne opinion had been expressed'that the proposal, if given effect to, might adversely affect the farmer, it was decided to obtain further information from -AusoraJja regarding the habits of the -mrd, before definitely advising the liovemment in tho matter, i •.It was suggosted to tho/'board that rtepjrmwht bo taken to get vendors .or artificial manures to give with their lwioo lists guaranteed analyses in more .Bimple terms. Several communications regarding sites-for tho, establishment of additional experimental farms were TecoivJbd, but it was decided to point out that the board, had already made recommendations to /the Government in this di'teotion, but they could not select any particular places for; the farms, this being a, question for tho Government 4o * decide.
V '■*•' .sV'b-oommitfceo was set up to niake moranes with regard''to the carriage of lime for agricultural purposes on the Railways, a number of' complaints,- on the; subject having been leceived from different parts of the' Dominion. '.- A proposal that the boardi should take steps to initiate a system of judging ■exhibits of live stock, dairy produce, cereals, farm produce, etc., at the A. and P. shows by points was referred to a'sub-committee to report to the board at next meeting. „'. Various suggestions that had been made regarding suitable employment for returned Boldiers were discussed, particularly a proposal that light employ- \ ttent might be found for a number of •;men physically incapable of hard work, oy utilising their services'iii the production of potash from seaweed; and! arrangements were ma<& to obtain reports on the subject from some of tho leading experts of tho Dominion. ' Reports were received from the board's representatives: who -waited on the Government in regard to the following matters:—Purchase of meat and cheese by the Imperial Government; exiport of seedy and dirty wool to Allied 'countries; removal of embargo on the export of hides; and demarkation in connection wibh reafforestation.
- In addition to the foregoing, together with other matters of a confidential iiadiscussed, the following came up '■• for consideration:—Proposed sumraaris- . ing, collating, and publishing of the results of agricultural experiments, v and: tho setting up of a soil survey; . 'deposits of limestone; agricultural education; noxious weeds; and matters arising out of resolutions referred to the board by tho Council of Agriculture. . .
A number of other matters had to be deferred until the next meeting, as the board had io attend the conference convened /by tho Minister in Charge of Imperial Supplies Branch to discuss tho 1 arrangements being made as to the '<fisposal- of frozen, meat to the Imperial Government for the use of the troops and.civilian population in Europe.-
