AT THE PILGRIMS' CLUB
MESSAGE FROM NEW ZEALAND
Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. iV" ;. ; -. London, October 26. - i La his i speech. at ■ the' Pilgrims', Club ■Mr.-'Massey, after outlining New Zealand's part in the war, explained the terms of .the Compulsion and Pensions ■ Acts.. Tho details were cordially rc--1 ceived. ■■'
'."-Mr. M&ssey concluded by giving them the following message from Now Zealand ;—"Stand fast, men of Britain, for tho glory of tho flag and tho glory of .humanity." fi Sir Joseph Ward paid a tribute to tho ivork of the Navy. But for it there would bo no British Empire. English statesmen had lessons to learn from war, of which, as a.citizen of the Empire, he would suggest; ono was the necessity, of an air 1 fleet equal in efficiency to tho Navy. The Overseas Dominions could share in this work'by training aviators. The Jutland battle had proved that tho enemy -with its airiships was provided with superior eyes for their navy to that of Great Britain's. Wo must recognise that airlighting had come to stay. Regarding the treatment of' Germany after the war they should not show any sentimental stupidity towards a country which had attempted'to put us under. If :he had his way. ho would not allow their ships to' pass, through the Suez Canal on terms equal .to our ships, or give them coaling facilities. Wo should give ■preference to the . Allies-in tho struggle. '•:"■-..■ , Sir Charles Berosford-' complimented ■Mr. Massey on tho thoroughly businesslike compulsion soheme, and agreed entirely with Sir Joseph Ward's views as to' an air fleet. '.'.'
