AMERICAN POLICY
AND SUBMARINE PIRACY U53'S DEPREDATIONS Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. (Rcc. October 27, 5.20 p.m.) London, October 26. In the House of Lords, Lord Sydenham raised the question of U53-'6 depredations, and asked?,whether it was in conformity with Germany's pledge. Lord Beresford said ho had always thought that the German Government wanted to involve America in the war to enable it to say it could not fight tho whole world, also because America would be of considerable assistanco at the Peaco Conference. It was a serious statement to make; but he maintained that America was aiding and abetting the shameful wholesalo torpedoings at sight, endangering lives. The torpedoing of merchantmen was becoming more serious, and we should take no'tice of it.
Viscount Grey, Foreign Secretary, replied: "Wo havo no undertaking with America as to what information she had or what she would do with it when obtained. We could only get information from tho officers of sunk merchantmen." Tho Government could not answer Lord Sydenham until possessed of all the facts. It is understood that the American and German Governments are; discussing the subject, and it was inadvisable to raise tho subject in that House. He especially deprecated .tho discussion of American policy.
