HONOURABLE MENTION
A RAID AND A TROPHY. The Minister of Defence has received from Brigadier-General Bratihwaite a German Mauser pistol taken from' a German soldier who was killed during a raid on New Zealand trenches oa July 27, 1916. The New Zealand troops engaged were the 2nd Battalion, Wellington Regiment. The . pistol, which is comparatively new, is encased, in. a, serviceable holster made of the best cowhide, which may be accepted: as somo evidence that 4he Germans have, still some good leather left. The pistol will be placed in the Dominion Museum.
General Braithw'aite forwarded also .the following extigoct from orders expressing appreciation of .the conduct of men who repelled the raid: —
"The Brigadier wishes to place on record his appreciation of the Work done .h.V the under-mentioned non-commis-sioned officers and men of the 2nd Battalion, Wellington Regiment, who were on duty' as bombers in on the night of July 27, 1916, By their coolness and devotion .to. duty they beat off the enemy's raiding party, estimated at about 25 or 30 Germans, who, when attacked and.bombed) retired, leaving one dead man, and several articled of equipment', close to our wire::—' :..■:■•',■ 10/3424 Lance-Corporal 0.
