The Poverty Bay Turf Club's spring meeting will be concluded to-day. Acceptances for the Auckland Racing Club s spring meeting close to-night. The Wellington horseman, W. O'Halloran rode two winners at Gore on Tuesday, while another North Islander in H. .I.owo .was successful .on Chndic. o*Halloran scored on All Ready and John Barleycorn. Tho last-named, who i? the New Zealant Cup, defeated another Cup horse in.Rorke's Drift in the big handicap. The race was worth 120 sovs. to the winner.

In the Electric Handicap, fivo furlongs, at Taratohi next week Lady Black, winner of the Nainai Handicap at Trentham, has top weight~9st. 31b. She will probably be ridden by tho apprentice F. Corlett, who is able to claim a 51b; allowance.

There will not bo as many horees at Eiccarton as there were at Trentham. As a -result of the form of the Wellington meeting- several trainers havo reduced Uieir teams for the south. J. H. Prosser will only take three, viz.. Gold Soult, Gbldstroam, and Rockbound; and J. Lowe will t«ko Seadown, ,Qiakwana, and Matilda. - , The yearling full-sister, to Sasanof was |n the saddling paddock at Trentham on Tuesday, and several owners, had a look at the filly. She. is better grown than was her brother at .the same age, and generally speaking is a more developed youngster in every ; way. The* Australian horee. The Golfer, who 6cored at the Poverty Bay meeting yesterday, will probably be taktn on to Auckland, where he is engaged in the Maiden. Hurdles at the Ellerslio meeting, which opens next week. By his success in the Pearco Handicap at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting, Fiery Cross brought his winnings since the declaration of the Now Zealand Cup weights to and lie has

now incurred a penalty of 101!). for the two-mile race at Riccarton, bringing his weight to. 7st. 31b. Tho Now Zealand-bred maro Garlita has won more money than any other Australian racehorse of lior box,, the brilliant Wakeful having held that honour prior to the recent A.J.C. spring Carbine, Trafalgar, and Poseidon, in that order, have won the greatest amount in state-money among Australian horses. Carlita'e earnings to dato amount to .£19,496. Mr. J. P. Buchanan sustained a serious loss at the Kiiilooh stud last week, when the well-known brood mare, Neva, died while foaling to Martian. Neva, whb was bred by Mr. J. F. Eeid in 189,5, was by Stepniak—Whirlpool, by St. George—WaterspritOj by Traducer— Waterwitch, by Camden—Mermaid. Neva was tho dani of Danube. The Spalpeen gelding Nicomar changed hands recently, and is now an inmate of F. Lind's 6tables at Greenmeadows. Acceptances for the Taratahi meeting close on Saturday night. Since his suooesses at Trentham several inquiries have been made with a view to purchasing the Rokebv colt Crowhurst, but his .owner, Mr. H. Gaisford, who bred him, is not disposed to sell the colt. , The two-year-old Crowhurst has been nominated in the handicap events at Riccarton, but ho is .not to be taken south. His next appearance will be at the Follding meeting at the end of November. F. Davies will keop his team at Trentham uutil' Saturday, when ho will make I a move for tho south. D. Munn, with • Sea Lord, goes south by the same boat. ' A southern writer remarks i—"lt is 1 said that the owner of Toki was fined ; .£lO for running- his horse barefooted at the Hawke's Bay meeting. If that is really so, it would be interesting to know ■ oil what' authority the fine was inflicted, or what knowledge of racing prompted the punishment? Old-time trainers frequently rail their horses barefoot when tho going was suitable. It is a well-known fact' that lightly-plated horses go faster than more lieavily-shod ones, and., on favourable going the barefoot horsoidan. go faster than if ho was' running in plates." Several well-backed horses materialised at Gisborne yesterday. Amongst the number were Grand Idea, who scored in the First Welter Handicap, and Potentiality, who ..won the Scurry. The lastnamed has been a most unlucky performer in the past, and placed performances havo lapded him near the top of the handicaps, though until yesterday he was eligible to race as a maiden.
