MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE CASES. Mr. L. G. Heid, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yestorday, and dealt with tho polico cases:— •For insobriety, William Heaps, who had a record of three previous convictions, was fined 205., in dofault seven days' imprisonment. Horace Alfred Simkin, a soldier, was charged with being found drunk, also with obstructing Constable Gainey in the execution of his duty, and with nssaulting the same constable. He was convicted and lined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment, and was also ordered to be handed over to the military _ authorities.

Richard Hackings, Edward Lines, and John Wren, who were defended by Mr. H. F. O'Leary, were charged with the theft of three dozen boxes matches, value Is-. Gd., the property of tho Anchor Shipping Company, and wore each fined 205., the alternative being soven days' imprisonment. A remand to November 1 was granted in the caso against Thomas Pollock,, who was- charged that on August-5 he did steal ono bottlo of whisky of the value of ss. Gd., the property of the New Zealand and African Shipping Company. Bail was-fixed at £20, and one surety of £20. CIVIL CASES, - Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M., heard the civil cases. . The Inspector of Awards (Mr. G. H. Lightfoot) proceeded against Mrs. H. D. Howard, of tho Crystal Lounge, I Lambton Quay, to recover a penalty for employing sis waitresses for more than 52 hours in each week, and for such extended, hours did fail .to pay for such employment half as much again as the ordinary rate of wages as required by the said award. Judgment was given for plaintiff for 205,• JUDGMENT BY DEFAULT. Judgment was given for plaintiff by default in the following undefended civil cases:—

Cooze, £2 10s., costs 10s.; same v. M. P. Petersen, £9, costs £1 ss. (3d.; Commercial Agency and Boss and'Glendming, Ltd., v. 11. W. Jones, £2 9s. 3d., costs 10s.; same v. Albert Henley, £44 Is., costs £2 145.; Veitch and Allan v. Mrs. J. A. Cotter, £1 125., costs 55.; B. Reginald Collins and Co., Ltd., v. F. H. W. Traill, £14 145., costs £1 10s. Gd.; Vacuum Cleaning Co. v. M. Jackson, £3 3s. 9d., costs 10s. JUDGMENT SUMMONS. Judgment summons cases were dealt with as follow:—Guseppe Greco was ordered to pay Albert Henry Macaulcy tho sum of £20 16s. by instalments of £1 per month; Henry Wright was ordered to pay F. J. Embury the sum of £4 6s. '4d. 011 or before November 9, or servo four days in prison; Arthur Scoullar was ordered to pay Frederick E. Goodey tho sum of £7 18s. 011 or beforo November 9, in default soven days'- imprisonment; Alfred Bradley was ordered to pay George Mudge the sum of £2 7s. on or before November 9, or serve 48 hours in gaol.
