PROCEDURE TQ BE FOLLOWED.
Sir,—Will you kilully answer.me.the following questions? (1) When a soldier is killed in battle,how long do 'the Defence' Department pay the next-of-kin tlio money. Hhat the soldier left for"them?
"'. (2) When and' how should' one who was mainly' supported, by the said soldier apply for a pension?—l am, etc., ' ' '. ' I'.T.Y. | • [IVhen a' soldier dies, advico is sent ' to the next-of-kin by the Pay Branch of tlho Defence Department, and accompanying the advice goes'a "warrant- for all allotments due up tp the date of notification of tho Tho payee is advised that no more moneys can be paid under the allotment unless proof; of dependency is furnished, and the .payee is advised in caso he or'she is a dependant to apply to tho Pensions Board for a pension. A form on which application can bo made is. sent enolosed. These forniß can also bo obtained, from the ncarost post.office. If the Pensions Board requires timo in which to make-inquiries concerning the application, the I'ay,Branch is instructed to' continue the allotments meanwhile. The delays aro rarely considerable, and in no caso is a gap allowed In tho caso of a., wife no proof of dependency is required, and' the' allotments aro continued for a period of 26 weeks after..-the date of notification of Jhe death. In the meantime the wife is expccted to apply for her ponsion. A different procedure is necessary in tho case of other persons receiving allotment moneys, hecauso in many casos ths money is paid over to friends to he deposited i« savings banks or othorwiso hold'for tho benefit of .tho soldier him,self. s Persons really dependent receive tho allotment moneys until the pension is awarded. If a person claims to he a. dependant, but does not satisfy the l'onsions Board that such" is .the caso, and does not therefore recoivo a. pension, no refund of allotments which may have been received ■after the. dato of notification of tlie casualty is ever required.
