ENEMY'S TERRIBLE LOSSES ON RUSSIAN FRONT

KOVEL SECTOR . A SECOND VERDUN

Australian-New Zealand Cable Association. London, October 25. The "Daily Graphic's" correspondent afc Petrograd, in a summary of the situation on General BrusilofPs front, describes it, as grave for Germany. "The army of General Brusiloff," lie says, "lias accounted for 100,000 Germans in three weeks. General von Hiudenburg's experiment of standing firm and trying to bit back is nearly as costly, and quito as unsuccessful, as the earlier Austrian tactics on the fiovel front, which is now a second Verdun. The Somme battleground is a running sore in Germany's side. Since the catastrophic defeats in June, Germany has beon sending from. the uorth and the interior division after division, and lnirling third-rate troops against tho shrapnel, rifles, and bombs of the Russian field fortifications. Tito principal fighting is in front of Vladimir Volynski, where tho Germans are vainly attempting to drive General Kaledin back to Lusk. Tho Germans are being'cut to pieces in most sectors, where tho Russians are in superior numbers:, Their losses have been particularly heavy on tho Zlota Lipa, where tho Austrians and Germans arc intermixed. They always fight badly together. The Russians in a.single day stormed six positions, and took five thousand prisoners. There were terrible casualties when the Germans were defeated ill a great attack on tho heights of tho right bank of tho river. One column, in close marching oix3er, attempted to take advantage of the inequalities of the ground, in order to get close to tho Russian trenches. The air scouts observed the column, which was caught by tile pitiless shrapnel. The column is believed to have lost seventeen thousand men in a few hours. Tho enemy's murderous losses were due to the desperate'-tactics of Von Hindenburg in 'ti-ying to copy Brusiloff's massed infantry attacks, but the battered Germans have lost the nerve necessary to carry thorn through."

GERMAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. (Rec. October 26, 5-5 p.m.)' i London, October 35. !A! German official communique slates:—"A Russian attack-north-west of Lusk failed." i
