ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
— ; FOUR INQUESTS. Mr. D. G. A. C'oopor, District Coroner, held four inquests yesterday afternoon —two 'at the Magistrate's Court and two at tlio Hospital. Tho first concerned the death of Pte. Thomas Fairloy, of D Company, Twenty-first Reinforcements, whose body was found floating iu the harbour in tho vicinity of Jervois Quay on October 20. Deceased was 41 years of age, a single man, whoso father rosides in Sydney Street, Caversham, Dunedin. After hearing evidence tho Coroner returned a verdict of "Found drowned," there being no evidence as to how deceased got into the water. An adjourned inquest touching tho death of Henry Stockbridge, 44 years, a married man, who resided at 148 Washington Avenue, was concluded. On October 18 Stockbridge was being operated noon at tho Hospital. Halfway through tho operation ho collapsed, and died. Artificial iospiration was ' kept up for three-quarters of an hour without effect. Medical evidence, showed that death was due to respiratory pajralysis. Summing "up, the Coroner brought ill a verdict in accordance with tho medical evidence, _ and remarked that everything had been dono to restore animation. He added! that no blame was attachable to anyone.
Mr. Cooper, subsequently held two inquests at tho Hospital. Henry Plantagciict Wood, 02 years of age, who had been a steward on tho s.s. Takapuna, suddenly 'became unwell. After receiving attention' on board, he apparently became better. A little later, however, tho symptoms reappeared, and he was admitted to tho Hospital, where he died on October 19, a feiv minutes after arrival. Dr. Fyffe conducted the post-mortem examination, which showed that death was due to pleuritic effusion as a result of heart disease. A verdict was returned accordingly. Annie Thomas, wife of .Tolin Thomas, of Pet on p. collapsed while undergoing an operation at the Hospital. Dr. Herbert stated that the patient had been under observation for some time prior to the operation, and it was considered that she was quite sound enough to take ether when it was administered. Death was attributed to heart failure, and everything had heen dono to restore animation. The Coroner | returned a. verdict that death "was due to sudden heart failure, no blame, ucmg attachable to anyone.
MINER KILLED BY A TRUCK By Telcirraph—Press Association.
christohlirctl, October 25. James Daniels, a miner, aged forty, resident at Kaitaugata-, but who had been living in Lyttelton for the past few weeks, was hit by a truck at a railway crossing this morning. His head got under the wheels. Ho was shockingly mangled, being killed instantly. At tho inquest the ovidonco showed that Daniels threw himself deliberately in front of the moving truck. A verdict of suicido was returned.
FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Pahiatua, October 25. Mr. William D Kemp, farmer, one of the victims of tho recent motor accident near Woodville, died last mght til tho Pahiatua Hospital.-Mr. Kemp. who was driving the car at. the time ot tho accidcnt, had his skull fractured when tho car capsized. Ho was a single man, I aged thirty-one. and son of Mr. Darnel Kemp, a well-known settler at Kumcroa.
