The special sub-committee set up by the Canterbury Patriotic Fund Executive to report on matters likely to assist tho society to systematically and eft'cctivoly use its funds for tho permanent benefit of returned North Canterbury soldiers has recommended that assistance be granted to men who prior to enlistment were domiciled in North Canterbury, no matter in what district m New Zealand they may determine to settle, providing that this princip|o is recognised by the Patriotic Committee operating over tile district in which any such mon may settle. But every endeavour should bo made to persuado men to settle in Canterbury. Among

tho many schemes of relief, it was recommended that spccial consideration bo given to individual cases where obligations exist in regard to propertypayments, and that commitments for life insurance and tuition fees of children of soldiers bo given sympathetic consideration; also that grants bo authorised, not exceeding £200, for university or other educational courses; or towards the maintenance of tho applicant whilst taking' such courses, but only in such cases whoro tho applicant can show that he has sufficiently advanced in his studies to pass the necessary examinations within a reasonable time; that grants be authorised up to £200 to assist men desirous of acquiring businesses, hut only in such cases where tho evidence submitted by tho applicant is such as to warrant reasonable success in the projected business being attained; that £10,000 be set aside for tho assistance of permanently maimed and disabled soldiers by: (a) The erection of institutions at some

future date, and (b) teaching -new trades in the homo. The executive adopted all tho- recommendations.
