PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

The Wellington Philosopliic.il Society will hold its annual general meeting in the museum this evening. The annual report shows that the session has been one of considerable activity, and tliat a number of valuable papers have been read before the society. The society has set up a committee to consider the best means of organising scientific and industrial research. The astronomical, technological, and geological sections havo been very active during tho session, and a number of technical papers have been read before tliem. Reference is made to the severo loss to tho society in tho death of its former president, Mr. Thomas King, and to the valualilo gift from Miss Jessie King, of the lung Equatorial Teloscopo and astronomical books. The Roll of Honour of tins society contains 17 names, of whom Liout. Val Blake was killed m action. The committee appointed to provide a memorial to the late Mr. A. Hamilton reports that arrangements aro now well forward for the erections of a- suitable monolith and tablet over tho grai o at Russell, Bay of Islands. The statement of receipts and Payments sliows that tlio society invested £15u in tlio War Loan, and including this amount has a balance of £273 10s. /d., and in addition £48 Bs. 23. is availablo for expenditure on tho library. The society will elect its president and council for next year. By courtesy of tho jurist Department, the hne Mm of A Lout of the Southern Alps" will bo shown. Mr H. Hamilton will describe a crabeating seal. Further notes on New Zealand Bird Song will be given by Ml. ,T. Andersen, while a paper on Vegetation," by Dr. Cockayne, J.R.S., an air. B. G. Aston, F.L.C., and on "Brachiopods," by Dr. J. Allan Thomson, will be taken as read.
