"IT GIVES ME A PAIN!"

PAYMENT OP "HONORARY" SECRETARIES. It transpired, to the surprise of all present, that for the sixteen years Mr. 8. Mr. R. K 'l'ingey said it was not right that the secretary should pay such expenses out of his own pocket. Everyone in the room endorsed those sentiments, so Mr. Tingey moved that tho sum of £2 2s. be voted to Mr. Stidolph toreimbusaliim for his\outlay on stamps. "I refuse it," said Mr. Stidolph- stoutly, "unless you like to give it to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. It gives me a pain to sco in tile reports that Mr. So-and-So was voted the sum of £5 or £10 for doing the work of honorary secretary. How can it bo called honorary work when they accept such money? _ Major Lomax explained that some of the branch secretaries did a good deal of work that was not always apparent. Speaking for Wanganui, his, branch had had a heavy death rate, and tho sccrefary, not only in tho case of death, but even when a member was ill, went out of his way to help the relatives all he could. 'When a member died ho frequently took in hand the arrangements for tho funeral from the womenfolk, who sometimes did not know how to go about such matters. Finally Mr. Stidolph was solemnly warned that lie must not go on paying out moneys out of his own pocket in connection with the association's work, and he promised to obey.
