BRITISH LINE ADVANCED IN THE WEST
EAST OF CUEUDECOURT AND LESBOEUFS SUCCESSFUL ATTACKS BY THE FRENCH Au6tralian-New Zealand Cable Association. London, October 23. Sir Douglas Haig reports: "The enemy is shelling between Lo Sars and Gueudecourt? Wo gained the near lip to two craters which were formed yesterday at the Ypres bluff.' (Rec. October 24, 8.20 p.m.) London, October 24. Sir Douglas Haig reports: "We advanced our line eastward of Gueudecourt and Lesboeufs, capturing one thousand yards of trenches. Our artillery stopped the enemy's attempted attack southward of Grandcourt. Of two raids which were attempted on Sunday night against our trenches in the Gommecourt neighbourhood, our fire stopped one, and we inflicted heavy casualties. The second raid penetrated our outpost lines, but a counter-at-tack promptly drove tho enemy out. Our aeroplanes on £>unday bombed' two railway stations behind the enemy's lines,,' hitting a train in motion,' and doing much damage to buildings and rolling stock. Soven of the enemy's machines were brought down, and manv others, in a damaged condition, wore forced to descend. Eight of ours have not returned." FRENCH SUCCESS ON SAILLY-SAILLISEL London October 23. A French official communique states: "We captured the brow of Hill 128, west of Sailly-Saillisel, and captured a post between the Avre and tho Oise. The enemy's aviators bombed Luneville. Wo dropped 4200 kilogrNjnmes (about four tons) of projcctiles_ on furnaces north of the Metz and on the railway stations at Thionville, Me?,lores Les Metz, Longwy and Metz Sablons. We also bombed the German factories at Rombach, and the railway station at Mars La Tour." (Rec. October 24, 8.20 p.m.) Paris, October 24. A French official communiquo states: "Wo have made appreciable progress north-eastwards of Morval." GERMAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. London, October 23. A German official communiquo states: "Wo Mooclilv repulsed strong English attacks between Lo Sars and Lesboeufs. Tho Froncli penetrated only our first line north-west of Sailly. Wo penetrated the Ambras Wood, north of Chanlnes, but voluntarily withdrew east of the north part of the wood. We brought down twenty-two enemy aviators."
