FURIOUS ATTACKS ON THE RUSSIAN WING
ENEMY ATTEMPTING TO TURN THE FLANK OVER TWENTY BATTALIONS REPULSED WITH CRUSHING LOSSES (Router's Telegram.) (Roc. October 24, 5.5 p.m.) Petrograd, October 23. Over twenty of the enemy's battalions, including a whole Austrian division, were engaged in a furious assault on Friday pn the wooded Carpathians, with the object of securing, regardless of cost, the heights east of the Pass in Kirlibaba. All the attacks were repulsed with crushing loss. One battalion was absolutely.. wiped out. In another, thero were 170 survivors out of a strength of 850. The Germans are ceaselessly attacking Bystritza, • where the breaking of the Russian front • would briiig the enemy in rear of Kimpolung and the whole of the Russian left flank.
