THE FLY AND THE STABLE
Sir, —Bfore. tho City Council makes any hard and fast rule for the sterilization of stable manure they 'should be very sure that they know what tlicy arc about. Stable manure is a valuable product for agricultural purposes, and although there are many chemicals eapable of destroying tho fly'larvae, moat of those recommended are injurious to plant life, and manure sterilized with them would produce disastrous results to the farmer and gardener. Very thorough researches 011 tins subject have been made by scientific men in the United States, ivitli tho result that there ia only one satisfactory formula which is at onre fatal to the fly and of some advantage to the plant. That is borax—an inexpensive article, which is a complete sterilizer and is found to slightly accolcrato the ammonia in the soil without producing any reduction of nitrogen.—l am, etc., HENRY WRIGHT.
