SOLDIERS AND DRINK

Sir, —It is hardly necessary to say that tho anti-shouting regulations havo utterly failed to carry out tho object they wore intended for —possibly fewer flasks and bottles aro brought into camp, but beyond tho troublo of obtaining sixpences there is v.g apparent diminution in tho shouting act. >

The matter which cries aloud for remedy, as it did before the war started, is the quality of tho beer and spirits vended by a number of publicans. A man can drink a skin full of good liquor, and go to bed quietly, but very few drinks of tho stuff dealt out in some hotels cause men to lose their heads and do all kinds of foolish things —miss traims—assault pickots and guards—rouse their hut mates, or fallin next morning quite incapable of doing justico at drill to themselves or their instructors.

If all hotelkeepers would keep the quality of their goods up to the standard maintained by the proprietors of "Quinn's Post" at Trentham and the "Tauheronikau" Hote*, near this camp, thero would be nothing io rouse about.

Surely something can be done to remedy this crying evil. The Moderate League havo a chance to make good in. the eyes of soldiers and civilians alike, and if tho . independent Press would only take the matter np an improvement would bo quickly made. —I am, etc., SOLDIER,
