CARNIVAL AT PETONE OVER £100 RAISED
IN AID OF RED CROSS WORK
Tho biggest crowd that has yet patronised tho annual Labour Day carnival at Petono turned out yesterday to the function on tho Recreation Ground. Thero were several thousand pcoplo present, including a very largo number of children. Tho day was fine and sunny, and tho gathering was a, thoroughly enjoyable one. In past years the monoy made at the carnival has been devoted to some local object, hut this year tho proceeds aro to go into tho Red Cross fund. Last evenI ing the tally indicated that tho fund would benelit by over £100. Tho gates alono brought in £50. Tlirougnoiit tho day a good trade was done at tho refreshment booths, and a big return is expected from . them Tlio shooting gallery, aunt sally, and tho various games, appeared to moot with ready patronage. Tho Trentham Band added to the enjoyment, of tho day.
In tho morning a procession, consisting of decorated vehicles, tableaux etc., passed through the town, on route to tho ground. ' The Trontham Band led the way. "Britannia," a children's tableau, arranged by the railwaymcn, followed, and in this_ tho characters were: —Britannia, Miss G. Simons; England, Miss J. Millward; Scotland, Miss L. Woodhead; Ireland, Miss IC. Walsh; Wales, Miss G. Parrant; India, Miss V. Hunter; Canada, Miss B. Andrews ; Australia, Miss E. Walsh; New Zoaland, Miss M. Pollock. The guard of honour was composed of Masters J. M'Dougall, E. Silby, G. Midhurst, D. Sheppard, I. M'Dpnald, R. Pawson, and W. Quayle.
Then came competitors in fancy dross, Boy Septus, decorated vehicles, Drum and Fife Band, and tbo Fire Brigades. Results of competitions held wore: — Decorated Bicycle—Master Whittakor

The principal attractions for the holiday are the Auckland Trotting Club's Meeting and the Labour Day sports. The usual procession was abandoned this year. The weather is .fine. > Thames, October 23. The Labour Day celebrations were held in perfect weather, and were a great success. Largo crowds from town and country viewed tlio procession, which was a unique display. Returned troopers occupied a prominent position. A. good programme of sports was carried out in tho afternoon. Dunedin, October 23. The weather was fine for the holiday. Tho principal attractions were the Labour Day sports at Outram, races at Gore, and tho trotting ' meeting at Oaniam.
