LABOUR DAY
CARNIVAL AT NEWTOWN PARK PICNIC SPORTS MEETING
Tho weather was fine and clear for Labour Day, but a brisk wind, in which there was some keenness as tho afternoon wore on, blow steadily from tho north all day. The only Labour celebration in tho city was a picnic sports mooting at Newtown Park. The pro : gramme was made up of a great variety of evonts, and was not at all like tho programmes of Labour Day sports of soino years ago, at which tho best athletes of the country strove for big prizes. It was a happy and enjoyable gathering, however, a treat moro especially for tho littlo people,,who were at tho part in their thousands. The committeemen and officials, assisted by the police, had an anxious time keeping the ring clear, hut they managed very well on tho whole, and tho big programme was through on time.
News had come to Wellington overnight of tho death of one man who, had ho not answered the call of his country, would certainly havo been at tho park taking an active part in the control of tho carnival—Sergt. E. J. Carey, died of wounds. As a mark of respect to his memory all the flags were halfmasted, the sports were stopped for a brief space, and the men present stood with bared heads while the band played "A Garland of Flowers."

W. Leslie; starter, Mr. Cusack; handicappers, Messrs. T. W. Leslie and J. Cusack; press steward, Mr. E. Kennedy; judges, Messrs. F. Cornwell, A. Bumotte, J. M'Kenzie, P. Nash, R. J. Ruddell; judgo tug-o'-war, Mr. J. Doylo; judge dancing, Mr. D. M'Pheo.
