DISCHARGED SOLDIERS

Hie last weekly statement t of the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department, just mada available by the Hon. A. L. Herdman, contains remarkably good figures, showing that there are very few 6oldiers remaining unemployed. Following is the text of the return:—

Total numbor of men on register:— (a) Disposed of, 4765; (b) under action, 567; (o) not ready for aotion (including men returned by recent transports), 398; total, 6730. Particulars showing how cases dealt with: —(A) Cases disposed of: (a) Men who have work to return to, and men who have re-enlisted or returned to military duty, etc., 1989; (b) men placed in employment, 1126; (c) men who havo signed "Assistance not required," 1105; (d) left New Zealand or cannot ascertain address, 145; (e) men who have not responded to repeated communications, and men who nave accepted work tho Department found for them, but failed to start work, 400; total, 4765.

(B) Cases under action:—(a) Reports upon cases not yet returned by officers making inquiries, 102; (b) awaiting further advice {including men who have stated that they are not yet ready for work), 267; (c) at present on "Employment Wanted" Register, 198; total, 567.

(C) Cases not ready for action: — Men convalescing, not ready for employment, and not yet discharged by the military authorities, 398. Grand total, 6730.
