Tho trial of the five men -who were irrested in connection with tho fivepound note forgeries lias opened. Two pleaded guilty, and wereremanded l for sentence. Four prisoners, two of whom had been convicted of' note forgeries, attacked a warder at Tamworth Gaol, and escaped. One subsequently ■_ surrendered. The others are still at liberty. The warder is in hospital in a critical condition. ■ A MESSAGE FROM FRANCE HOPE EXPRESSED FOR FULLEST EFFORTS. Melbourne, October 23.' Mr. W. M. Hughes has received a message from M. Briand (Premier of France) expressing his gratitude and admiration for tho Australian soldiers, and_ expressing the wish to see Australia fully prepared to go with France to tho end.

Roplying to a deputation of racehorse owners, on_ behalf of bookmakers, the Premier said that the bookmaker must go, or racing would become a, menace. Convention decided to accept the invitation of the New Zealand Associations to send delegates to a conference in Dunedin in February.
