THE WEATHER

The Meteorological Department does not work on Sunday, and hence public curiosity as to the nature of the extraordinary tempest which raged on Saturday' has had to wait till to-day. What smote us, says the Government Meteorologist in his official report, was "the centre of a cyclonic disturbance," which passed through Cook Strait, and" which, says Mr.'Bates, "accounted for heavy rain in many parts of tho country. Strong south-westerly winds havo ruled, but have changed to northerlies and westerlies to-day, with fair to cloudy weather." Yestorday, following a clear night, was a bright, mild day in Wellington, with an increasing northerly breeze, which carried a chill with it as the sky became overcast, towards the evening. This fair weather isn't going to last, however. Yesterday's indications, says the Government Meteorologist, pointed to "tho development of a westerlv storm area, shortly. The weather is clouding over, and rain will follow later. Wo are to expect increasing northerly winds, with the barometer falling everywhere —probably fast soon, in the south."
