THE ILLICIT PASTIME OF "HEADING 'EM"
BIG "TWO-UP" RAID IN AUCKLAND. ,
By Telograph—Press Association.
Auckland, October 21. An interesting side issue to the postponement of the races to-day was a raid by detectives of an alleged "twoup" school in Durham Street. \Vest, and the arrest of thirty-six men who were there, on charges of being found in a coipmon gaming-house. The place had been under suspicion for a considerable time, and reasoning that a number of persons who had been disappointed of a day at the. races would compensate themselves with the fascinating pastfcimo of "heading' 'em," Detectives Hammond, Cullen, Sweeney, and Ciimmings deemed the time opportune for a raid on what they believed to be a "two-up" school, and invoked the assistance of Constables 'Trotter and Neill. After having armed themselves with a search warrant, they made their way quietly to the; place. The raid proved to be well timed, for after managing to dispose strategically, cf the doorkeeper, the party made a surpriso entrance to the main room up above, where they found thirty-six men ranged .round a baize-covered mattress, on which a quantity of money was lying.. The door was locked, while nobody was permitted to leave the room. An "5.0.5." message was sent out to the uniformed police, who rallied to the call, and the men in tho room were split up into parties of six and dispatched under esoort to the police station in taxicabs. ■
When,.the lirst'party of arrestees went away the word was passed round among the public in Queen Street, and almost at once a crowd of several hundrd assembled and encouragingly cheered each successive taxi load of arrested men on their way "up above."
