THE PRICE OF BUTTER
APPEALS FROM GOVERNMENT'S DECISION. The dairy companies are bringing an. action by originating summons in tho Supreme Court to test the validity of certain portions of tho . Order-in-Couucil which provides for Uie carrying out of the scheme devised by the Board of Trade for regulating the local price of butter. The case will probably come before the Oourt on Fridaynext.
Au appeal has also beeu made to the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon'. W. F. Massey), now in London, by tho Farmers' Union. Acting under instructions, Mr. E. C. Jack has sent to Mr. r Massey the folloging cablegram:—"New' Zealand Farmers' Union, behalf producers, strongly protests against export tax, three-farthings per pound butterfat, imposed by Order-in-Council without sanction of Parliament. Consider action illegal, directly opposed your Government's expressed policy. Introduces most pernicious principle. Relying upon you prevent this injustice being done to dairying industry." Mr. Massey has replied as follows:— 'Butter-fat: ' Communicating Government your telegram." It i s understood that if the Order-in-Council should be held to be invalid! other Orders-in-CouncU _ can be made which may not be invalid. PROTEST BY DAIRY FARMERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hawera, October 21. At a representative meeting of tlw dairy industry of Taranaki, "held at Hawera on Saturday, a resolution was carried' pretesting against the principle contained in the recommendation of tho Board of Trade's report, and tho'regulations made- by, tho Government, with regard to the fixing of the price of butter locally, and confirming tho action of the Special Committee in deciding to tost ilia validity of the regulations.
