His Excellency tho Governor (accompanied by Mr. Helmore, A.D.C.) and Brigadier-General Sir Alfred Robin, have gone to Dunedin to meet the Hospital ship Marama.
Tho Hon. \V. Fraser returned from Marlborough on Saturday morning.
Dr. Anderson, Director of Education, returned from Christchurch by tho Pateena on Saturday.
Mr. Thomas O'Carroll, the promising young "Wellington dancer, who figured so successfully in Mis Estelle Beere's recent dance recital at the Grand Opera House; left on Sunday night for Auckland, where he has been engaged to appear in an important part in another dance recital which takes place at His Majesty's Theatre on Friday, 27th instant, the proceeds of which are in aid of the Red Cross Funds.
Mr. James Nicol, who arrived in Wellington in 1840, and who has resided in tho Wairarapa for over seventy •years, died on Saturday morning at the age of 85. Ho married, in 1862, a daughter of the late Mr. John Smith, iron-founder, of Wellington.
Sergeant Otto Bremner, who has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, is a son of Mr. W. C. E. Bremner, formerly county engineer at Masterton.
Tho death, on tho field of honour, of Private George Bertram Wright, killed in action on October 1, in France, is reported. Private Wright, known as /"Tim" amougst his Bohemian friends, was a generous young fellow, and his death will be greatly regretted. He was connected with the jfew Zealand Ambulance Corps, and left -with the s.s. Marama to join up with tho 9th Reinforcements. He was with the firm of Frost and Frost, dentists, before enlisting.
Lieutenant-Colonel S. R-. Davidson, a New Zealandcr, and an old boy of Nelson College, who has reached nigh rank in the Indiau army and is now second in command of the 47th Sikhs, has been promoted brigadier-General. Colonel Davidson joined the Indian Staff Corps in SoinalUand, and was mentioned in dispatches early in the present war. , ■ /
Four of those upon whom the Senate of the University of New Zeajand conferred degrees yesterday are in khaki. Captain A. V. Short, M.8., Cr..8., enlisted with the Medical Corps of the Field Ambulance. He received a commission .as captain, 'and was right through the Gallipoli campaign, being mentioned in dispatches by Sir lan Hamilton. He is no-r serving in France. Mr. B. M. Kibblewkite, M.A., was recently wounded, while Mr. W. 0. Cross, B&c, left with the Sixteenth Reinforcements. Lieut. W. D. Hose, 8.D.5., is with the New Zealand Dental Corps at Trentham.
Lieutenant James Robert Dennistoun, whose death in Central Germany from wounds' is reported, was born at Peel Forest, Canterbury, and educated at Wauganui and Malvern Colleges. Ho was a member of Captain Scott's Antarctic Expedition in 1910-11, and was awarded the King's Antarctic medal, and that of tho Royal Geographical Society. He made the ascent of many snow-capped' peaks of the Southern Alps, amongst them several peaks never before ascended. Ho also climbed, alone. Mitre Peak, in Milford Sound, which up to that time had bean considered inaccessible. Lieut. Dennistoun, who did a considerable amount of exploration work, was a member of tho Alpine Club. On the outbreak of war ho returned to England and obtained a commission, ffis brother, Lieutenant-Commander George Dennistoun, D.S.Q., R.N., i 6 on active service.
A son of tho late Sir Maurice O'Rorke—Mr. E. Dennis O'Rorke—is in England in the Remount Depart-, nieht of thesWar Office Mr. O'Rorke married Miss A. Rhodes, of Cbristchurcli, sister of tho Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes, late Postmaster-General of the Dominion. Their eldest son, Lieutenant O'Rorke, is now in France with his regiment, the 12th Lancere. Their second son, recently mentioned in dispatches, who has a commission with tho 60th K.U.R., has been twice wounded and gassed, but is now back at the front. - '
The member for' Stratford, Captain J. B. Hine, cabled to Mrs. Hino last week that he was leaving Sydney then for tho front. During his stay in Sydney Captain Hino had taken a flight in an aeroplane, and was quite pleased with the novel experience. Mr. J. G. Coates, member for Kaipara, is a captain in the Nineteenth Reinforcements.
Mt. Bertram Mossman, who loft New Zealand with the Thirteenth Reinforcements as lance-corporal, was selected as instructor, and is-now undergoing a special course of training at the School of Instruction, Tidwork, England. Lance-Corporal Mossman was formerly a pupil at the Palmerston High School. Two of his brothers have been killed in action.
Second-Lieut. H. Sc-rley Maclean, reported missing on October 3, has now been reported killed in action in France on October 1. Born in New Zealand and educated at Itemuera School and King s College, Auckland, he was for a time a. member of the College Rifles, and a good shot. He joined the South British Insurance in that town afterwards, being transferred to the Dunedin office, and thence to Invercargill, from whence he enlisted. He was a sergeant in the Ninth Reinforcements, but, earning a commission, was transferred into the Twelfths. His great grandfathers, Maclean and Freemantle, fought at Trafalgar,, one fighting on the Victory and gaining a medal which is at present m the family. Lieut. Maclean hated war and fighting, but when duty called he did not falter. His father, formerly of the Bank of 'New Zealand, Auckland, is living in -London. His youngest brother is a medical student at the University College, London, and another brother is in Canada. One sister is on the staff of the hospital ship Mahenoand another on the teaching staff of the Fitzherbert East School. Miss Sorley, Ralmerston, and Mrs. Cole, Ancleland, are sisters of his mother. Lieut. ■ Maclean was 30 years of age. Dr. Sorley is m uncle of deceased.
