' SHIPPING OFFICES CLOSE. Monday being Labour Day, the Government Shipping Office and the loeal shipping offices, cicepting the Union Steamship Company, will close during that day. Tlio Union Company will open between 9 and 10 in tho morning. It will also be a holiday on tho waterfront, and as far as can bo ascertained the only ships which will bo working will bo the Mapouvika and tho Waitomo. Tho Mapourika has to get away for Nelson and tho West Coast on Tuesday, and will have to work to enable her to do so, and the Waitomo, which is expected to get away for Newcastle on Monday, will havo to work on tho Monday to .bo able to carry out theso arrango: monts.

According to advice received in English mails yesterday morning, tho 61ia\v, fiavill, and Albion Company's liner Matatua, which haß been ashore at Poter's Klver, St. Ataxy's Bay, Newfoundland, since tlio end of July, has been successfully re.,u>ated. exceptionally bad fortune. She caught (ire at Halifax, and was the scene of a terrific explosion, which resulted' in the death of Captain Gillman, ouo or the licsMtno-wn masters In the Shaw, K'aviH, and Albion Company's service. Sho was then sunk by tho authorities to prevent tbn fire spreading, and after oonßiderahio difficulty was raised again. It was generally thought locally that her position was hopcloss, and tho news just received is all tho more welcome. This week's Sydney boat, tho Manuka, which left Sydney on Thursday afternoon, is bringing 1000 tons of cargo for Wellington, and has also 105 saloon and 28 steerage passengers. She is duo here on Monday, and leaves on Tuesday afternoon for Lyttelton. ,WESTRALIA FOR SYDNEY. The Wostralia, steaming dno day late, is due to arrive at Auckland on October '23, and at Wellington, via Gisborne, on October 28. She has 48 nasscngers and 1700 tons of cargo for New Zealand ports. Sho leaves here on Saturday for Dunedin direct, in order to pick up her time-table, and is duo hack in Wellington on November 2. WAIMANA FROM LONDON. The head office of the Shaw. Savill. and Albion Company have received cable advice from Hobart that the Wnimana, from London, left Hobart in continuation of hor voyago at 7 o'clock yesterday morning, and is duo at Auckland on Tuesday, nnd at Wellington about four days later. NIKAU SAILS -LATE. To give those who are desirous of attending the races, and -who want to get away for Nelson on Saturday night a chance to catch the boat, the departure of tho Nikau for Nelson this evening has been postponed until 7.30 o'clock. POUT PHILIP LEAVES BALBOA.' Tho C. and D. Lino adviso that tho Port Philip (4060 tons, Captain Auld), which left New York on September 25. left Balboa on October 5, and is due in Auckland during the first weok In November. Sho will como on to Wellington after discharging at Auckland, and will then go on to southern ports and Australia, to complete discharge. PORT LYTTELTON AT MELBOURNE. Tho Port Lyttelton (6444 tons, Captain Haytcr), which left London on August 23, arrived in Melbourne on Thursday morning. After discharging at Mclbourao tho vessel will visit Sydney, Auckland, Napjer, and Wellington in that order, and is duo here daring tho second week in November. A. AND A. STEAMERS. . Tho A. and A. Lino advise that the City of Delhi (4443 tons, Captain Bremner), which, left New York on September 28, is due hero on November 7. and will afterwards go on to Auckland. Also -that tho Ardangorn left New York at tho end of fast month for Lyttelton and Dunedin. via Panama, and Is due atsLyttclton about' November 9. Sho will not come to Wellington, but wUI go on to Australia to complete discharge. OiTtKNA WITH CASE OIL. Advico lias been received that the oil steamer Cyrena, from Singapore, left Brisbane on Tuesday last, and is due at Auckland next Tuesday. After discharging at Auckland the Cyrena will come on to Napier and Wellington, and is duo hero about October 25. She will then go on to Timaru and Dunedin to complete discharge. SHIPBUILDING ON THE CLYDE. .During the month or August only three vessels were launched on the Clyde, their ' aggrcgato gross tonnage hcing 19,000. tons. The largest vessel of the three was tho twin-scrow steamer Tyndareus, which was launched for tho Ocean Steamship Company, Liverpool. The others woro a cargo steamer of 5000 tons for a Glasgow firm, and a steamer of 24C0 tons for Iho General Steam Navigation Company.- On tho Forth only one vessel was launched during the month of August. She was tho Countess of Mar. and-was the first vessel built by tho recently-established Forth Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Ltd. She is'a- vessel of 2200 tons gross, and 5s 285 feet in length. Owing to Monday next being Labour Day, tho Rarawa will leave Onchunga on Tuesday next instead of Monday, and will leave Now Plymouth on Wednesday, October 25, instead 'of Tuesday. Tho John is at present in Wanganui, and is to sail from Wellington for southern ports on Tuesday.
