Sir,—At present thero are scores of young men of military age hanging around the Howard goldfields, the half ■ of them doing little or no work, and dodging about from one placo to another trying to keep out of tho way of recruiting officers. Theso inen, of whom there are all classes, including foreigners, Whoso nationalities are very questionable, aro determined to evade the law, and have repeatedly denounced conscription. Tliey make bold statements openly to the effect that tboy will not fight for their country or oven contribute one shilling towards tho sending" of a few Christmas boxes to tho boys who aro now so gallantly upholding the honour of the- nation. Sir, can nothing be done to rouse tlieso Bhirkers out of tlie district?—l am, etc. VOLUNTEER.
