RUMANIA'S WAR STRATEGY DEFENDED
CKIIMAN OFFICIAL 1 COMMUNIQUE
London, October 17. A German official rmiimuniquo slates: "We captured tho hoights south of Dornaw.'i.tra Pass. Tho Rumanians are offering resistance on the_ roads lo the pass. We repulsed attacks south, of Monastir, on tho Corna River, and tho Nidze mountains."
(Hoc. October 18, 6 p.m.)' Rome, October 17. Tho Rumanian Attacho defends the strategy of the Rumanian General Staff. "Wo liave committed no blunders," ho says. "In order to onsure general approval of Rumania's intervontion, it was necessary to attack the Austrians in Transylvania, instead of the Bulgarians. The General Staff never entertained the foolish belief that wo would he able to conquer Transylvania Banat in a few weeks. Wo knew perfectly well that the enemy was bound to counter-attack with superior forces. Rumania's aim was to shake the Austrian defences, and deprive Hungary of the resources she had ooncentratcd in Transylvania Banat. These aims wero completely attained. The Rumanians' orderly and methodical retreat-, without losing uien or material, hae shown that they wore fully prepared for all eventualities."
