MAGISTRATE'S COURT

FRACAS ON A STEAMER, Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday and dealt with the following cases:— ' Gosshoun Simmons, a coloured seaman and member of the crew of the s.s. Kaikoura, was charged with assaulting John Marshall and Reginald Pierre, also members of the crew of the vessel, so ag to cause' them actual bodily harm. As tho Kaikoura is to leave Wellington this-morning, the evidence of three seamen and the chief officer were taken, and the accused remanded till October 24. The evidence given by the three coloured seamen was on the lines of tho report published yesterday. Mr. H. F. O'Lcary appeared for accused. OTHER CASES. Mary Ross, charged with the theft of two gold rings, valued at £6, tho property of Ada Aldridge,. was convicted and ordered' to come up for' sentence *when called upon. Jean Kellober, with one previous conviction for drunkeness, had a prohibition order issued against her. Emma Crawford, with two previous convictions, ' and George William Jackson, with a similar record, were each fined 10s., in tho alternative threo. days' imprisonment. John Flannigan, with threo previous convictions, was fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. ''.'.-'._ Robert James Nisbit was ordored to pay the balance of a maintenance order of 55., in default to undergo seven days' imprisonment. Ho was.also ordered to be imprisoned for 14 days,, tho warrant tc be suspended so long as he- pays ss. a week; lie was further ordered to be imprisoned for one month,-warrant to be suspended so long as ho pays his wifo £1 a ■weok. Albert Edward Horsefiold, with arrears of. maintenance amounting to £8 155., was ordered to be imprisoned for olio month, :the order to bo suspended 60 long as he pays £1 a week off tho arrears. Thomas Hodges was ordered to pay 255. a week ofF arrears of-maintenance or undergo a month's imprisonment. Robert Thompson Caldow was ordered .to pay 30s. a week to his.wife, Jean Caldow.-
