THORNDON CLUB THORNDON CLUB. The.Thorndbn Bowling Club's green was formally opened for the season on Saturday. Tho weather was windy and somewhat Weak, hut thero was a good muster of members and visitors, including a largo number of ladies, and a very pleasant afternoon resulted. In welcoming the visitors and declaring the green open, the president (Mr. G. Hogben, 0.M.G.) made an appeal- far subscriptions for providing Christmas comforts for bur boys at the froait, and he also expressed tho hope that the membership of the club would receive several additions dtoring the season. The green was in , first-class order, though somewhat heavy as the result of the recent rainß, and promises to play really well as soon as the weather improves. ' There was a large attendance of looal residents to honour the opening'of the .Seatoun Club's green on Saturday afternoon. The weather was none or tbo brightest, but that was compensated for in part by the spirits of the Members and their guests, who thoroughly ■enjoyed the opening. Mr. H. E. Rich? ards, the president for the year, called upon the club's patron (and' incidentally the owner of the green), Mr. Alec Crawford, to perform the opening ceremony. Mr; Crawford's remarks wore made interesting on account of tSeir reference to ancient Miramar aud Seatoun, which had in the lifetime of one man developed from a- wilderness into the fair prospect of a thriving town that would one day form part of a great city. The speaker deprecated! the faoi that there were still those who referred to Seatoun as "Soatown.'VwhicK was quite incorrect. His father had always wished the place to be called Seatoun—tho name of the historic lands of the Crawford' family in Scotland— and he asked all piesent to correct tho mistake in pronunciation whenever thc-y could do so. Mr. Crawford' referred also to the regrettable effect tho war hod had on the membership of the club, .but hoped that it would pull through said prosper in tho future. The club had 'had to dispense with a groundsman owing to tho exponso, and the members' wore going _ to do' their best to keep the green in order. He called upon Mrs. Crawford to throw tho first jack, and duly declared the green jpen. On the whole the- greon is looking pretty well, and is playing well. Sir.co last season a picturesque summerhouse in the form of a typical Ma-m whare has been ereoted on the a'njrlo at the south-eastern corner of the green. Tho facade is decorated! in Native fashion, and on the gable hoards are inscribed- Maori words that, translated freely, mean: "Be up" and "Take your green," both-of which injunctions have plenty of significance to every bowler, and should relieve tho "skips" of the major part of their verbal duties. Friendly games were played duringitho afternoon, and halfway through ladies of Seatoun dispensed afternoon tea. . HATAITAI CLUB.
