At the statutory meeting of the Iron Ore Smelting Company the chairman announced ".that the- erection of the works had been 'commenced. The machinery had been ordered,* and it w&s expected tliiit the first furnace of a capacity of seventy
tons weekly, would be running by the end of February. The required capital had been secured, and the share-list would bo closed almost at onco. The Bank of England discount rate "was on January '2, 1914, reduced from 5 to 4j per cent., on January 22 it'was reduced to 4 per cent., and on January 28 3 per ccnt. Ou July JO the rate was raised to 4 per cent., and on July 31 it was raised to 8 per cent., and on August l it was further, advanced to 10 per ccnt. On August 6 the rate was reduced to 6 per cent., on August 7 it was fuTthcr reduced to 5 per cent., on July 13, 1916, it was raised to 6 per cent. ' OPEN MARKET RATES. v The open market discount rato for tlirea months' bills is 5 9-16 per cent., as compared with 5 9-16 per cent, last week,' and 48 per cent, last year.
Short.loans nre quoted at 5 per cent., as against 5 per cent, last week, and 44 per cent, last year. '

Sugar.—American granulated, 41s. 7id. per cwt. Bradford Tops.—The market is firm and cheerful, with better inquiry. Merino ■ counts have advanced a halfpenny, other counts are unchanged.
